While with child, a Stark Queen was walking in the wood gathering healing herbs and berries with some of her ladies when she fell and slid down into a ravine.
The ladies went to get help but became lost in the forest.
Soon, a group of large wolves surrounded the Queen. They noted she showed no fear as she prayed for the Old Gods to save her.
The wolves were able (they discovered) to talk to her in her mind. It must mean she possessed the gift of animal kinship. They said for her to be still. They would help her and surround her close to keep her warm until her people returned to get her. One wolf brought her basket and she was able to pull a few things from it to make a poultice on her wounds.
The Queen noticed several of the wolves had been hurt for various reasons: hunters, fighting and so on. She took some of the herbs and put them on the wolves while they were pulled in close.
A female wolf spoke to the Queen “You are with child. Since you have healed my family while you are here and hurt yourself - I will bestow upon your son the mark of the wolf and the ability to call on us whenever in great need.”
The women had been gone too long and guard were sent to look for them. Soon they found the ladies lost in the wood and soon were directed to where the Queen was.
The guard saw the Queen surrounded by wolves and drew bows to shoot them. She cried out in a strong voice while holding her hand up “NO! Do not fire on them!”
One by one the wolves licked her hand and moved off into the wood and the guard were able to climb down the ravine to get their Queen.
When the baby was born - it was a son. The Queen looked him over and there on the back of his hand was a mark in the shape of a wolf head. She commanded that the Starks would have a wolf head for their sigil thus forming their unbreakable bond.
She also commanded that any Stark born with the mark would be a leader and a ruler - no matter if they be male or female.
